M3U playlist vs Xtream login: what’s the difference for IPTV apps?

When your provider sends credentials, you usually see either an M3U playlist link or Xtream Codes details (server URL, username, password). Both tell your player where to fetch channels; they are just different “shapes” of the same idea.

M3U playlists

An M3U URL points to a text list of streams. Players download it periodically to refresh channels. Keep the link private—anyone with the URL can often watch on your subscription.

Xtream Codes / Xtream API

Here you enter:

  • Server URL (sometimes called host or portal)
  • Username
  • Password

Apps then build the same channel list without you handling a raw M3U file. Many UK users find this method quicker to type on a TV remote.

EPG and catch-up

Electronic programme guide (EPG) data may arrive as a separate URL. If your guide is empty, check that the EPG field is filled or enabled in the app settings—not every playlist bundles EPG by default.
